Why Visit Landmannalaugar?

If there‘s one thing visitors flock to Landmannalaugar for, it‘s the scenery. The views are incredibly diverse, ranging from multicolored rhyolite mountains and volcanic landscapes to black sand deserts and snowy glaciers. Sites like Bláhnúkur and Brennisteinsalda are world-renowned for their unusually colored rock formations. They follow you along as you hike through Landmannalaugar’s trails, shifting in hue with every change in light or weather.

Alongside unique Icelandic geology, Landmannalaugar is also home to natural geothermal hot springs. These pools are like a spa born from the earth—a warm water body that you can relax in after a day of exploring. The Landmannalaugar hot spring has a pleasant water temperature of around 36–40°C (96–104°F). So don’t forget to bring your swimsuit and towel!

Landmannalaugar has many superb hiking trails to explore, the most famous one being the Laugavegur trail. Lasting for about 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk, it’s well-known among hikers for its dynamic landscapes and mountain huts. Another popular and incredible hiking track is Bláhnúkur (The Blue Peak). It takes you to the mountain of the same name, known for being so brightly blue that it almost appears surreal.

Hiking in Landmannalaugar shows off the beauty of Iceland in a remote setting, far away from massive crowds. From rhyolitic mountains to black sand deserts, a Landmannalaugar tour is your chance to set foot on untamed Icelandic nature.

Best Time to Visit Landmannalaugar

One thing to note about Landmannalaugar tours is that they are only available during the summer season. You can go hiking from June to September, as the area becomes inaccessible on foot during winter. Keep this tidbit in mind when booking your trek at Landmannalaugar.

The best time to go on a Landmannalaugar tour is summer and early autumn. Peak summer months of July and August provide the most reliable weather and fully open trails. However, early June and September are arguably the most rewarding for those looking to avoid the crowds. Additionally, the cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable, and the hot springs are especially inviting.

Brennisteinsalda

Brennisteinsalda, or “The Sulfur Wave,” is one of the most impressive short trails in Iceland. The path leads across Laugahraun lava field, passing by hot sulfur springs and leading up to the 855 meter (2,805 foot) high mountaintop. From there, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree panorama over the breathtaking landscape you just passed! The trail is 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) in length, making it a 3-4 hour hike.

Laugahraun Lava Field

This distinctive lava field was formed in 1477, when a volcanic eruption occurred in the area. The lava solidified, and now a rough black mass stretches through the middle of the colorful valley. Laugahraun hiking trail is famous for its radiant scenery and steaming natural hot springs that accompany you on your journey. The road itself is beginner and family-friendly, taking only up to 2 hours to complete.

What to Bring for a Landmannalaugar Tour

A hiking trip differs from a walk in the park—you have to be prepared for harsh weather and terrain. You’ll need to bring sturdy hiking boots for rough grounds, as you’ll be walking on dirt, gravel, and even snow. Tour guides also recommend to bring warm and waterproof clothing due to unpredictable weather. Summers can be chilly here in Iceland, and when it rains, it really pours!

If you plan to swim in the hot springs (and you should!), packing a swimsuit and a towel is a must. It’s an incredible way to refresh yourself after a hike in nature’s very own spa! Our partners also advise bringing snacks and water on your adventure, as there are no shops at Landmannalaugar, Iceland! Lastly, you should take a camera with you, so you can capture the stunning landscapes.
