Why Snowmobiling is the Ultimate Winter Adventure

Snowmobiling is a fantastic way to explore an Arctic country. It gives you the chance to move through snowy paths at high speeds and see rugged mountain ranges and serene forest paths. Our partners recommend combining snowmobile tours with other activities, such as a trip to an ice cave inside a glacier. This way, you’ll have a more diverse and unforgettable adventure, all while maximizing your time spent riding the vehicle.

It’s perfectly safe as long as you follow the instructions. Usually, the tour guides operate the vehicle while the participants ride in the back. However, any individual who’s over 18 years old and has a valid driver’s license can drive the snowmobile themselves. If you choose to do so, you must always drive behind your guide in a single line. As long as you do it responsibly, you’ll find a safe and fun experience.

Our partners provide snowmobiling trips in some of the world's most beautiful Arctic areas. These include the Langjökull glacier in Iceland, as well as the great Swedish and Finnish Lapland. Each location has different terrain and creates a unique snowmobiling experience. Expert guides ensure your safety and comfort, providing high-quality equipment and local insights that make each ride exciting and memorable.

What to Expect on a Snowmobiling Tour

Snowmobile tours are guided by seasoned professionals with years of experience. On the day of the tour, the staff will introduce you to the important rules you must follow during your trip. No previous experience is required to go on a snowmobile adventure. However, if you want to try driving a snowmobile, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license.

After listening to the instructions, your tour guide will provide all the necessary equipment. This includes overalls, goggles, gloves, a balaclava, and a helmet. However, you must bring some things yourself. First, you’ll need warm clothing, such as a thermal shirt and a fleece for your upper body. You should also bring warm or thermal pants to properly protect yourself from the cold. As for footwear, it’s recommended to wear hiking boots.

Snowmobiling in Iceland

Snowmobiling in Iceland is a great way to discover the country. It’s one of the only places where you can drive this vehicle on the surface of a glacier and even on top of active volcanoes. There are three Icelandic glaciers you can visit. Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe, covers about 8% of Iceland. Langjökull hosts tours inside the glacier, where you can explore its ice caves. Eyjafjallajökull, known for its 2010 eruption, has since become a popular attraction.

Best Times to Snowmobile

In Iceland, snowmobile tours generally operate all year long. However, if you wish to combine it with ice caves or Northern Lights tours, note that these operate from November to April. Iceland’s snowmobile tour guides are some of the most qualified adventurers in the country with years of experience leading groups on the slopes. Each adventure is handcrafted to ensure that guests stay safe and informed while operating the snow vehicle.

On the other hand, Sweden has a specific snowmobile season. Due to safety concerns and regulations, it lasts from November to March. After those months, the snow and ice begin to melt. Snowmobiling becomes dangerous due to exposed rocks, and it can even disturb local wildlife. Finland also has similar laws that prohibit riding after winter. Generally, the country’s snowmobile season lasts from December to April, when the snow starts to melt.
