Route Overview

This adventure combines the thrill of a snowmobile ride over Iceland's second largest glacier, Langjokull, with the fascinating experience of exploring one of nature's true wonders, a natural ice cave. Learn how to handle a snowmobile under the professional supervision of our guides, who will lead you on an expedition to the brilliant blue formations of Langjokull Glacier's majestic ice cave.

After gaining a unique and educational perspective from the glacier's heart, it's time to take in more of Langjokull's sights. As we make our way back to base camp, you'll see both Eiríksjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers, as well as the colorful Kerlingarfjöll Mountains. All are providing spectacular photo opportunities along the way!

Duration: The tour from Skjól Campground is 4-5 hours. The tour from Reykjavik is 8-10 hours.

Ready to tackle Iceland’s second largest glacier? Join us for a wild ride out on Langjokull! We’ll hit off the adventure with a drive to our base camp in a specially converted Super Jeep. Strap on your gear and helmet for a full hour, zipping by glaciers on a snowmobile. Then it’s time for a spellbinding, spelunking expedition into the Langjokull Ice Cave.

Traversing a glacier by snowmobile is the quintessential adventure, but we're not finished yet! Along the way, we will stop at one of nature's true wonders, Langjokull Ice Cave. A natural ice cave formed over thousands of years, which gives us a unique perspective of the glacier from the inside while providing fascinating insights into its formation.

We will spend around 15 minutes exploring this incredible cave's patterns and deep-blue colors, then head back for more adrenaline-filled fun on the snowmobile. We round off our epic adventure with a few photos of the beautiful landscapes before catching our breath with hot drinks and cookies back at base camp.

Snowmobile Glacier Tour from Skjól Campground

On arrival at base camp, our friendly, certified glacier guide will equip you with everything you need for a warm and comfortable snowmobile ride. Don't worry if you've never been on a snowmobile before – you'll receive basic training and a safety briefing. This knowledge and your driver's license are enough to operate this vehicle.

Then it's off onto the vast, snow-covered glacier you go, taking in the natural splendor of this wild, untouched area, surrounded by some of Iceland's most famous sights. You'll see Eiríksjökull glacier, a giant table mountain formed during the last ice age; Hofsjökull glacier (temple glacier) and its famous domed peak; and the multi-colored Kerlingarfjöll Mountains. All of which offer amazing photo opportunities, alongside the fun of playing in the snow.

If you choose a tour option without pick-up, the meeting point is at Skjól Campground (please be there at least 15 minutes before departure). Then, we go on a rugged, scenic super truck ride to our base camp on Langjokull glacier. This route will give you a true off-roading experience with a sturdy but comfortable Super Jeep which is the perfect warm-up for future adventures.

Having had the adventure of a lifetime, we climb back into the super trucks for the scenic ride back to Skjól Campground. This unique tour is the perfect mix of fun, thrills, and awe-inspiring natural beauty, leaving you with memories for life. Arriving back at the Skjól Campground, we say our goodbyes. Glacier snowmobile and Ice Cave Tour from Reykjavik

We pick you up at your selected location in Reykjavik and drive you to the snowmobile base camp near Langjökull glacier, where we gear up and get ready for a full day. Your guide will show you how to operate the snowmobile safely and confidently. Then we strap in and ride out into the Western Highlands.

About a half-hour drive from the camp, we’ll take a brief detour to a natural ice cave. Some of the best parts of the winter season are these fantastic glacier caves in Iceland, which glitter like blue and white jewels. We’ll have a lot of time to explore the cave and pose for photos.

Practical information

The guided tour price is based on two people sharing one snowmobile. If you’re a solo traveler or prefer to have your snowmobile, you can upgrade to a solo snowmobile. See the booking engine for details.

Drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age to operate a snowmobile in Iceland.

Please note

This is a combination of two separate tours. If one of the tours is cancelled, you will still be able to join the other part.
This tour is designed for two persons sharing a snowmobile. If you prefer to ride alone, you can book a solo snowmobile for 10,000 ISK extra. You will also need to book solo for an odd number of participants.

You do not need a previous snowmobile driving experience. Your guide will provide you with operating instructions that you can easily follow.

However, you must have a valid driving license if you intend to drive the snowmobile.

Yes, Iceland is a cold country so our glaciers are here all year around and we can go snowmobiling in every season.

We do not have weight restriction but participants need to be able to fit in our winter overalls. The largest size we have is 5XL. Same goes for the physical level, the tour is listed as a moderate level and therefore anyone in average physical condition should be able to complete the tour without trouble.

Yes, we have toilet facilities at the base camp on Langjokull glacier, where the tour starts. However, bathroom breaks are not optional during the tour itself, therefore, we recommend you to use the bathroom before and/or after the tour.

We will provide you with an overall, a balaclava, goggles, gloves and a helmet.

First and foremost warm clothing.

Upper body: Thermal shirt and a fleece or a thick sweater over.

Lower body: Warm pants.
If you get easily cold, also thermals.

Shoes: It’s best to wear boots as it’s pretty cold on the glacier and they can get wet.

NOTE: You need to bring a lunch or some snacks. Lunch is not included in the tour.

Yes, if traveling solo you will need to purchase the single ride extra fee.

The age limit is 8 years old, of course in company with a guardian.

We do not recommend women who are pregnant to participate in our snowmobile tours. If you are traveling in a group, you are welcome to travel with them and stay at our basecamp while the group goes on the snowmobile part of the tour.

No, full drivers license is required to ride a snowmobile.

You can book almost all of our trips here on our website. You will find a booking window on each tour page and the best and safest way is to book and pay is directly through our website.

1. You can pay directly through our website. That is the easiest, safest and fastest way to reserve and pay for your adventure. If you choose this way then you will receive a voucher as a confirmation via email. Which you will need to bring with you on your trip.

2. You can pay via phone, our phone number is +354 562 7000. Please be noted, however you pay, you will always get a voucher. It is important to have your voucher ready for your tour so please remember to print it out or make sure that you can show it through your electronic device.

You will receive a confirmation email after you have made the booking. If you think that you have made a booking and haven’t received an email confirmation then you may please contact us via email with an inquiry through our contact form, and we will figure it out together.

All charges are made in the tour operators currency: For tours in Iceland it's Icelandic krona, ISK, but for tours in Canada/Greenland it's either USD or CAD.

We do not require minimum participants on most of our tours but there is a minimum of 2 people for a few of our trips. If you are traveling solo and interested in a tour that requires more than 2 participants than we can take down your information and contact you if more people book the tour.

We can arrange private departures as per customer request. Almost all of the tours that we offer can be arranged as a private tour. If you prefer to have a private tour arranged than you may feel free to contact us through email info@adventures.com

Unfortunately, we don’t have any waiting list for our tours. Availability is found on our website in the availability sheet where all updates will automatically be made to the sheet listed in each tour description. We have a variety of different adventure tours around Iceland so there is a big chance that you find a similar version of the tour that you were originally looking for.

If your tour that you have booked is canceled on our behalf than you will receive a 100% refund. The refund process is different depending on the way you booked the tour.

If you booked the tour through our website then we will start the refund process as soon as we know if you will not be rescheduling and you will receive a separate email with a confirmation about that your refund has been processed.

If you booked the tour via booking agent than you will need to contact them directly to receive the refund. We will confirm with them about your canceled tour and then the refund process will start on their end. Extreme Iceland only receives the payment when the tour has finished, that means that your payment still remains with the booking agent and therefore, the refund can only be processed directly from their end.

The minimum age requirement is decided by our operational managers and is dependent on each activity and its difficulty ratings and can, therefore, vary between tours We put great value towards safety for our customers and the minimum age policy falls under this. Therefore we can not accommodate a person that has not reached the age limit on the tour.
We ask you to try to understand that this is based on safety procedures and we can therefore unfortunately not make any exceptions on this rule.

We can unfortunately not accommodate you and your group if the number of your group extends the number of available seats left on the tour. Our website shows the correct number of available seats left. It is impossible to squeeze additional participants onto sold out departures as we have really strict policy measures as to how many participants are assigned to each guide on our tour departures. Therefore we hope that you understand as this is of course done with our customer's safety in mind.
