Grindavík & Krýsuvík Half-Day Tour

After the pickup in Reykjavik, we’ll leave the city for our first destination—Kleifarvatn. It’s one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, reaching 318 feet (97 m). If legends are to be believed, beneath all that water, a great mythical serpent, a whale-like monster, resides. Adding to the calm charm of the location are the black sand beaches and rugged cliffs of volcanic origin.

Next, we’ll visit the Seltún geothermal area, a mesmerizing land of bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and vibrantly colored mineral deposits. The air is alive with the scent of sulfur, and the terrain shifts between vivid reds, yellows, and greys—a perfect snapshot of Iceland’s geothermal heart.

Next, we’ll go to the emerald waters of Gígvatnsvatn / Grænavatn. It’s a volcanic crater with a lake that shimmers in green hues due to a large amount of sulfur. While we don’t suggest swimming in it, we encourage you to enjoy the view of volcanic ridges framing the area.

If you keep up with the news, you’ll know that Iceland has undergone a couple of volcanic eruptions - and one of these sites is our destination! Right by Fagradalsfjall volcano is Nátthagi, an area shaped by the lava flows of the 2021 eruption. As they solidified, they molded the lava field, creating geological formations. Your guide will take you to the Nátthagi viewpoint, which has a panoramic view of the area.

On this stop in Grindavík, you’ll see the eerie silence of a once-thriving fishing town, now deeply impacted by volcanic and seismic activity. Since late 2023, multiple eruptions have forced the evacuation of residents, leaving the town largely deserted. The streets are empty, with few families having returned briefly to retrieve belongings, though most are still living in temporary accommodations. The infrastructure, including homes and roads, shows signs of damage from lava flows and seismic shifts. The contrast between the town's natural beauty and the scars left by nature’s power is a stark reminder of Iceland's volatile geology.

Our final stop is the Sundhnúkagígar lava field, Iceland’s newest volcanic site with six eruptions since December 2023. Keep an eye out for steam rising from the ground as you observe the freshly formed landscape. After taking in this incredible scene, we’ll head back to Reykjavík, wrapping up the adventure!
