Route Overview

On this Langjokull Glacier tour, explore Iceland’s (and the world’s) largest ice tunnel. A 20-ton monster truck will take you to the entrance of the cave, located close to the top of the glacier.

Then trek through the 1,640-ft (500-m) long ice tunnel with separate frozen halls. Marvel at brilliant blue ice formations and magnificent crevasses. You’ll dream about this ice cave experience for years to come!

While there are a few ice tunnels and caves in various places around the world, there is nothing quite like Ice Cave Iceland, either high up in a remote area of a glacier, or on such a scale.

Never before has anyone been able to see the beautiful glacial-ice at the heart of a glacier. It is not quite a Jules Verne journey to the center of the earth, or even to the absolute center of the glacier, but it feels like an exciting and magical journey, deep within the glacier, and it is deep enough to reach another world, a world of magnificent, stunning glacial-ice.

We will spend about 50 minutes exploring the tunnels, the crevasses, moulins (glacier mills), running water, ice layers and space between them, different types of snow and ice, and how the glacier evolves.

We will have the rare opportunity to see normal snow turn into a different type: a crust of snow, and then we see that type become glacier ice. On any other location there's but pure ice.

Langjokull Ice Cave Tour From Reykjavik

The adventure kicks off as we depart from Reykjavik and make our way to Langjokull Glacier. The first stop is Deildatunguhver. This is Europe’s most powerful hot spring, gushing out about 48 gallons (180 liters) of boiling water per second! Don’t forget to look for a rare type of fern, Blechnum Spicant, that only grows here.

The next stop is Hraunfossar Waterfall (Lava Falls). The cascade is home to thousands of rivulets that seep through the lava rocks of Hallmundarhraun Lava Field. Then witness Barnafossar Waterfall, found just a few hundred meters from Hraunfossar. Your guide will tell you the spooky story surrounding the falls.

After lunch at a café in the vibrant town of Húsafell, we move on to Langjökull Glacier. Hop on a former NATO missile truck and drive close to the top of the glacier where the ice cave resides. Inside the cave, touch ice that’s been forming for hundreds of years. Explore a LED-lit tunnel that leads to different caves, including a frozen chapel for underground weddings.

After about an hour inside the glacier, exit the cave with memories to last a lifetime.

Our adventure comes to an end when we return to Reykjavik at approximately 6:30 p.m. (18:30).

Langjokull Ice Cave Tour From Húsafell

Meet us at the Húsafell Center, where your guide will be waiting for you. Then board a modified glacier vehicle for the ride across Langjokull Glacier and up to its peak. Sprawling over 368 mi2 (953km2), the glacier is Iceland’s (and Europe’s) second-largest ice cap. From its peak, you’ll get a chance to gaze across this endless snowy landscape.

Then enter the winding ice tunnel that leads to the ice cave called “Into the Glacier.” Your expert guide will lead the way and tell you about the lives of glaciers. The glacial cave is stuffed with natural ice formations including deep moulins, multi-coloured ice layers, sharp crevasses, and labyrinths.

Seeing and touching the centuries-old snow that has turned to ice is an experience like none other.

You’ll spend about an hour exploring Langjokull Glacier ice cave.

You can meet us at Husafell Center all year round an hour before departure.

During summer you can also meet us at Klaki Basecamp which is located closer to the glacier. Please note that the road leading to Klaki is a gravel road, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Detailed driving instructions will be available on your ticket upon booking. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.

To make the absolute most of your trip, it’s essential to be prepared. Don’t forget to bring warm outdoor clothing and your best hiking shoes!
When driving from Reykjavik to Húsafell, take Route 1 north to Borgarnes. Then take Route 50 and continue driving until Route 50 changes to Route 518, which will take you to the Húsafell Center.

The actual view of an ice cave may look different from pictures since ice caves are a natural phenomenon and are constantly changing. How they look may vary depending on the season, time of the day, lighting, and other factors.

Alcohol is prohibited on all of our tours before and during activities. If we find the participant to be intoxicated, we will prohibit them from taking part in the activity.

Yes, we do have a tour into Langjökull Ice Cave that has no minimum age and it is a fantastic option for the whole family. As a Whale Watching with our partner company Special Tours, enjoyable tour for a family traveling with young children, these guys have an enormous success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).

1. You can pay directly through our website. That is the easiest, safest and fastest way to reserve and pay for your adventure. If you choose this way then you will receive a voucher as a confirmation via email. Which you will need to bring with you on your trip.

2. You can pay via phone, our phone number is +354 562 7000. Please be noted, however you pay, you will always get a voucher. It is important to have your voucher ready for your tour so please remember to print it out or make sure that you can show it through your electronic device.

You will receive a confirmation email after you have made the booking. If you think that you have made a booking and haven’t received an email confirmation then you may please contact us via email with an inquiry through our contact form, and we will figure it out together.

All charges are made in the tour operators currency: For tours in Iceland it's Icelandic krona, ISK, but for tours in Canada/Greenland it's either USD or CAD.

We do not require minimum participants on most of our tours but there is a minimum of 2 people for a few of our trips. If you are traveling solo and interested in a tour that requires more than 2 participants than we can take down your information and contact you if more people book the tour.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any waiting list for our tours. Availability is found on our website in the availability sheet where all updates will automatically be made to the sheet listed in each tour description. We have a variety of different adventure tours around Iceland so there is a big chance that you find a similar version of the tour that you were originally looking for.

If your tour that you have booked is canceled on our behalf than you will receive a 100% refund. The refund process is different depending on the way you booked the tour.

If you booked the tour through our website then we will start the refund process as soon as we know if you will not be rescheduling and you will receive a separate email with a confirmation about that your refund has been processed.

If you booked the tour via booking agent than you will need to contact them directly to receive the refund. We will confirm with them about your canceled tour and then the refund process will start on their end. Extreme Iceland only receives the payment when the tour has finished, that means that your payment still remains with the booking agent and therefore, the refund can only be processed directly from their end.

The minimum age requirement is decided by our operational managers and is dependent on each activity and its difficulty ratings and can, therefore, vary between tours We put great value towards safety for our customers and the minimum age policy falls under this. Therefore we can not accommodate a person that has not reached the age limit on the tour.
We ask you to try to understand that this is based on safety procedures and we can therefore unfortunately not make any exceptions on this rule.

We can unfortunately not accommodate you and your group if the number of your group extends the number of available seats left on the tour. Our website shows the correct number of available seats left. It is impossible to squeeze additional participants onto sold out departures as we have really strict policy measures as to how many participants are assigned to each guide on our tour departures. Therefore we hope that you understand as this is of course done with our customer's safety in mind.
