Moose Safari on Horseback

We will pick you up for your tour in the northernmost Swedish town of Kiruna. About 25 km (15 mi) west of Kiruna is our farm in the village of Puoltsa (Buolža in Sámi), where our excursions are led. If we are lucky, there is a good chance we will see some moose or reindeer along the road during the drive. 

At the farm, you will be introduced to the Icelandic horses we will be riding for the day. Icelandic horses were bred in the cold climate of Iceland and have adapted to cold arctic temperatures, making them more resistant to the weather than other horses. They’re the perfect companions for a winter ride! Before the tour begins, your guide will give you a short introduction to horseback riding and help you get geared up. This excursion doesn't require any previous riding experience.

Geared up and ready to go we will head off into the forests of the Swedish Lapland to track down some moose. There are more moose in Sweden per square kilometer than any other country in the world. In the summer there is an estimated population of 300,000-400,000. Despite these large numbers, moose in the wild can still be very elusive. Riding horseback increases our chances of moose sightings, and we can get closer to the animals than usual. We finish the tour with a local lunch at the farm, the perfect way to end a day of adventure! 

This tour is certified with the Swedish Ecotourism Society’s label, Nature’s Best. 

Prerequisites: For the safety and comfort of our horses and riders, the maximum weight for this horseback tour is 90 kg (198 lbs).  

Pick-Up: Our farm is located in Puoltsa, 25 km (15 mi) west of Kiruna. Transfers can be organized from Kiruna for the extra cost of SEK 400 per person. Puoltsa is also reachable by car or bus (usually two trips per day during the season).
